A legend tells that Cossacks headed by Yermak Timofeevich, famous Cossack ataman, historical conqueror of Siberia for the Russian State,spent there a winter during Yermak's Campaign in Siberia.

The idea of conquering Siberia was inspired by the Stroganovs, a family of highly successful Russian merchants, who were granted large lands in the basins of the Vychegda, Silva and Kama and Chusovaya rivers. After hearing the exploits of Cossacksin the low reaches of the Volga river, the Stroganovs allegedly “made these brave men an offer of honorable service”. They sent them presents and a flattering letter (April 6, 1579) in which they urged them to abandon their occupation, which was unworthy of Christians, asked them not to be men of prey, but men of war of the White Tsar, to take risks they could be proud of, and to reconcile with God and Russia. They said: “We have castles and land, but little squads; go to us to defend the Great Perm and the Eastern edge of Christianity”. The Stroganov Chronicle says that when Yermak and his comrades read the letter “they shed tears of contrition”. The wish to clear their names of earlier misdeeds touched their hearts which were rough but still not devoid of feeling remorse. They raised a flag on the bank of the Volga, and on June 21 of the same year, with a band of five hundred and forty followers, joined the Stroganovs.
